Introduction

Casie ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Casie mobile application (the "App").

In short: We do not collect your name, email, or phone number. Your identity is an anonymous device ID stored only on your device. We do not sell your data to anyone.

Information We Collect

Anonymous Device Identifier

When you first open the App, a random unique identifier (UUID) is generated and stored securely in your device's Keychain. This identifier is used to sync your progress and preferences. It is not linked to your name, email, Apple ID, or any other personally identifiable information.

Usage Data

We store the following data linked to your anonymous device ID:

  • Subscription status (free or premium)
  • Listening and reading progress (content positions, completion status, and bookmarks)
  • Speaking practice usage (daily and monthly session counts and duration in seconds)
  • Translation feature usage (monthly token counts and request counts)
  • Content reviews you submit (rating, comment text, and associated content)

Subscription Information

Subscriptions are processed entirely through Apple's App Store and managed by RevenueCat. We receive only your subscription status (plan tier and expiration date). We never have access to your payment method, credit card details, or Apple ID.

Audio Data (Speaking Practice)

When using the speaking practice feature, your voice audio is streamed in real-time through a WebSocket connection to our server for speech-to-text conversion. The audio is:

  • Processed in real-time by Deepgram's speech recognition service
  • Converted to text for AI conversation purposes
  • Not recorded, not stored, and not saved on any server
  • Discarded immediately after processing

The text transcription of your speech is used only within the active session to generate AI responses and is not permanently stored.

Content You Generate

If you submit reviews or ratings for podcasts and books, the review text, rating, and your anonymous device ID are stored to display reviews to other users.

Information We Do NOT Collect

  • Name, email address, or phone number
  • Location data
  • Contacts or address book
  • Photos or camera data
  • Browsing history
  • Advertising identifiers

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information solely to:

  • Provide and maintain the App's core functionality
  • Sync your listening, reading, and speaking progress
  • Enforce usage limits based on your subscription plan
  • Generate AI-powered content (podcasts, books, and speaking responses)
  • Display community reviews and ratings
  • Detect and prevent abuse of the service

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate the App:

  • Supabase — Backend database and authentication infrastructure (Privacy Policy)
  • RevenueCat — Subscription management and receipt validation (Privacy Policy)
  • Deepgram — Speech-to-text and text-to-speech processing for speaking practice (Privacy Policy)
  • Inworld AI — AI language model for generating speaking practice responses (Privacy Policy)
  • Apple App Store — Payment processing and app distribution

Text content (not audio) may be sent to AI model providers for content generation. No personal identifiers are included in these requests.

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on Supabase's infrastructure with the following security measures:

  • All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest
  • Row-level security policies ensure users can only access their own data
  • Device IDs are validated against strict format requirements
  • API endpoints require authentication tokens
  • WebSocket connections for speaking practice use HMAC signature verification

Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account directly from the App (Settings → Privacy & Data). When you delete your account:

  • All listening and reading progress and bookmarks are permanently deleted
  • All speaking usage records are permanently deleted
  • All translation usage records are permanently deleted
  • All content reviews and reports are permanently deleted
  • Your device ID record is permanently deleted and subscription reset to free

Children's Privacy

The App is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected such information, we will take steps to delete it promptly.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Delete your data — Use the in-app account deletion feature at any time
  • Access your data — Contact us to request a copy of data associated with your device ID
  • Opt out — You may stop using features that process data (such as speaking practice) at any time

International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed in countries other than your country of residence, as our infrastructure providers operate globally. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy in the App. The "Effective Date" at the top of this page will be updated accordingly. Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
